Parsifal, Beijing Music Festival 2013

Letter from director Michael Schulz

Dear ladies and gentlemen of the Vienna Philharmonia Chorus, It was a great pleasure to work with you on a staged production, albeit briefly during the first Parsifal in Beijing.  You are superb. Many thanks, Michael Schulz

Letter from conductor Gustav Kuhn

Thank you so much for your brilliant work in connection with the first production of Parsifal in China.   It was an exemplary performance!

130 years after its world premiere, Richard Wagner's opera "Parsifal" was performed in China for the first time on 29 October 2013 at the sold-out Poly Theater in Beijing, to great acclaim.

Gustav Kuhn conducted the China Philharmonic Orchestra in a co-production with the Beijing Music Festival initiated by the Salzburg Easter Festival. Director Michael Schulz restaged the production with a largely new line-up of soloists (not those from the Easter Festival in Salzburg) and the Vienna Philharmonia Chorus.

Burkhard Fritz as Parsifal, Michaela Schuster as Kundry, Iain Paterson as Amfortas, Attila Jun als Gurnemanz and Derek Welton as Klingsor all received vigorous applause.
